Monster High Dolls

The Monster High Dolls were made back in 2007 but were officially released in 2010.

Made by Mattel, these 10 – 11 inch fashion dolls reflected the latest fashion trends but had a freaky heritage: they were descendants of the famous movie monsters such as Frankenstein, Count Dracula, Medusa and generally zombies and werewolves.

These dolls live in a universe where they attend a school called “Monster High” and all of the students and teachers that attend this school are monsters and ghouls from popular monster movies and books.

The Monster High dolls have become a collector’s item and are highly sought after because the dolls look so unique and have so much personality and many interesting characteristics.

Another interesting feature that sets these dolls apart from many other fashion dolls, apart from their horror movie themed looks, is that they have articulated bodies. Which means that they can bend at their joints, such as their knees and elbows and you can remove their hand and feet to make re-dressing up easier.

Interestingly, or perhaps because they are descendants of ghouls and monsters, these dolls don’t have one skin tone. Rather, some dolls have a blue-ish skin tone and others have green or pink. This makes them even more interesting to look at.

What Are Fashion Dolls?

Barbie is a good example of a fashion doll. She wasn’t created as a play along doll with the features of a baby and baby accessories and clothes.

Rather, Barbie had the face and body of a grown woman and wore the most fashionable clothing too.

This is exactly what fashion dolls are: Dolls that physically resemble teenage girls or young women, with beautifully made up faces and hairstyles to match and have a trendy line of clothing too.

Because they are Fashion Dolls, this makes for an interesting addition of the latest fashionable costumes for each doll to have.

As well as their unique clothing, each doll has a diary or journal and a pet. Some have hydration stations, a bed, and jewelry boxes shaped like coffins as accessories which can be bought separately in addition to the dolls.

Monster High Movies, Games & Website

The Monster High product line has been so successful in such a short space of time, that the demand for these products is growing at a fast pace and Mattel, the makers of these dolls, are trying to accommodate that demand as best as they can.

There is a Monster High website where visitors can take a look at the character bios of each doll as well as download fun activities and play online games.

You can also view what are called “webisodes” of Monster High on this website. Webisodes are episodes of a Monster High show that are available for online viewing.

Monster High Books

As well as having their own website, the Monster High dolls have their own YouTube channel and a series of
Monster High Books written by Lisi Harrison.

The first Monster High novel was released on September 2011.
The second book which was called “The Ghoul Next Door” was released in March 2011.
The third book is called “Where There’s A Wolf, There’s a Way” and this is due for release in September 2011.

A Monster High diary-book which is called “Drop Dead Diary” is scheduled for release in October 2011.

The Monster High Franchise

The Monster High franchise which markets the entire line of Monster High dolls, books, shows and so on, is the largest that Mattel has ever undertaken.

The company acknowledges that it is taking a risk with this product line is hoping that this will pay off in the long-term as it is targeting the pre-teens and teenage market segment and feels that these hip and trendy fashion dolls and their daily high school trials and tribulations will appeal to many.

The Monster High Characters

Mattel did well to base their new line of toys on the problems and issues teens and pre-teens are likely to encounter at High School.

With students and teachers all being ghouls and monsters, this makes for an especially interesting mix to the stories and shows based around these characters and has great appeal for teenagers.

Monster High Abbey Bominable

Abbey Bominable is a 16 year old and the daughter of the Yeti. She is at Monster High because her family are good friends of the Headmistress of Monster High and she is an exchange student from up north.

She is the captain of the Snowboarding team.

Abbey loves her Uggs and comes with the usual accessories that Monster High dolls come with: a pet, a doll stand, a brush and a diary.

Abbey’s pet is a baby woolly mammoth called Shiver.

Whichever way you look at it, the Monster High doll Abbey is unique and beautifully created.

Abbey Bominable Looks So Unique

Is it Abbey’s white fur lined Uggs that give her an ultra stylish look or her light blue and slightly glittery skin which gives her a shimmery, shiny look overall?

Abbey’s hair is irisdescent and sparkly and not made out of gold strands that snap when brushed. Abbey’s hair has a unique texture to it and can be properly brushed through.

Another interesting thing about Abbey is that she does not have “normal” hands. Instead, she has “claw hands”
which at first you might think are out of character with such a beautifully put together doll, but believe me, they will grow on you.

She is dressed in the latest fashion, has super cool jewelery to complement her outfit, immaculate make-up and striking white hair with blue and pink streaks.

At the moment Abbey seems to be in huge demand and might be difficult to find in stores and possibly even run out of stock online. Although, Mattel, the company behind the creation of these dolls, is doing its best to try to meet customer demand.

In any case, Abbey Bominable seems to have a lot more unique and striking features than many of the other Monster High dolls, and this is quite a huge claim to make given that the rest of the dolls are quite remarkable in their own right too.

Why Is Abbey More Expensive Than Other Monster High Dolls?

The Monster High dolls seem to be priced differently from doll to doll and this is due to the characteristics and design features of each doll.

Whilst it is true that all of the Monster High Dolls are unique and highly stylized, it would appear that Abbey is one of the original Monster High characters, as opposed to being one of the Dead-Tired or Gloom Beach dolls and hence will be a litte pricier compared to the others.

In addition, Abbey looks more like that actual character from the Monster High webisodes, more so than any of the other dolls.

Note: The Monster High dolls are recommended for children aged 6 years and above and are extremely popular with girls from the ages of 11 to 15. Even grown up women have been known to grow fond of these dolls!

This is because these dolls are beautifully made and have a lot of detail, their faces are beautiful, fully made up, their hair looks great, their outfits are trendy and cool. They have become collectors items with many who know seek to buy as many of them to add to their collection.

Abbey Bominable seems to be one of the harder Monster High Dolls to track down.

Monster High Spectra Vondergeist Doll

Spectra Vondergeist is another one of those freakishly fabulous students that attends the school at Monster High .

As with all other Monster High dolls, Spectra has her own pet too – a ferret who goes by the name of Rhuen.

You might have noticed from the news media and maybe even from your children and your friends, that the Monster High fashion dolls are all the rage at the moment and girls who are pre-teen and teenagers seem to fall in love with them.

These dolls are highly articulated and the hand come off and can be snapped back on again. In fact, the arms, hands and legs all bend at the joints making it easy to put Spectra in many different poses too.

This makes it easier to re-dress the dolls especially when you have a new Spectra Vondergeist costume to put on your doll.

Spectra Vondergeist Has See Through Limbs

With Spectra, being the daughter of ghosts,it comes as no surprise that her arms and legs are seeo-through, up to a point. This is a really cool and unique feature and the effects are very well done.

A slight negative about the Spectra and Rhuen pair is that Rhuen, her pet ferret cannot stand alone and has to cling onto Spectra’s arms. Apart from that, Rhuen is a lovely purple colored ferret and this pair are yet another great collectible set from the Monster High fashion dolls set.

These dolls have small parts that could pose a potential choking risk to young children and therefore are not recommended for children under the age of three years.

Spectra Vondergeist Fashion Sense

All the Monster High characters have either famous monster parents or are related to spectres and monsters in some way. Spectra is the daughter of ghosts and has the ability to float through walls and overhear school gossip.

She writes for the school newspaper and manages to get the latest goings-on into the newspaper.

As you can tell from the image, Spectra has weird and funky two-toned hair, long flowing locks that are a vibrant purple and lilac in places. She looks very feminine and has a beautifully made up face (just like the other female Monster High Characters).

The most captivating thing about her is her face. Large blue eyes, with incredibly long eyelashes to die for, beautifully shaped eyebrows and full, luscious lips.

She is stunning to look at and one of the most interesting things about her are her see-through limbs. This is a cool effect, not the whole of her arms and legs are transparent, just parts of them but they make for an amazing effect. Unfortunately you won’t be able to tell this from the image above.

Dora The Explorer Dolls

Dora the Explorer dolls Dora The Explorer has grown to become a firm favourite with young children. The doll is based on the animated cartoon series of the same name which is featured on Nickelodeon in the United States and loved by children, especially pre-school children throughout the US.

Playing With Dolls Is Not Just Child’s Play

Playing with Dolls We associate dolls with childhood, and most girls would remember having had at least one doll to play with during their childhood.

However, it seems that with the advent of popular fashion dolls such as the Monster High fashion Dolls, many older children (around 10 years or more) and even women are becoming fascinated by these dolls.

It could be because the Monster High Dolls especially are becoming more like collectible items because they are exquisitely made and have such unique personalities and dress styles that make them so different to each other.

It seems that people are buying these dolls because they want to have the entire collection to display and admire.

Baby Dolls For Play & Helping Mommy

Baby dolls such as Corolle’s Mon Premier Calin doll are great for giving to very young children when new siblings have arrived. We did this with our then 2 and a half year old daughter when our son was born. Since she is the oldest and had had all of our sole attention to herself for so long, we were mindful that the arrival of a second baby might not be something that she would take lightly to. So, we bought her a Baby Annabell Doll and gave this to her as a present when we arrived home from the hospital with our newborn son.

It worked and had the desired effect that we wanted!

Instead of becoming jealous or anxious at the attention that her new brother was getting, our daughter turned her attention to “her new baby” and would mimic me. This made my life so much easier, it meant that when I was feeding or cleaning our new baby, our daughter would be feeding or cleaning her “new baby” too. So, I didn’t have to worry too much about her and worry that she was not getting enough attention because my daughter would be doing whatever I was doing but with her baby, so we did things in parallel and it was great.

Of course, this didn’t go on for ever and after a few weeks, she got fed up of looking after Baby Annabell and started taking an interest in her brother!

Playing With Dolls Brings Out The Nurturing Instinct

Playing with dolls does bring out the kind and nurturing side of your child. It’s great to watch them feed, clean, rock and sing to their baby doll.

And since children, especially those who are 4 years old or just under, are the centre of their own universe, they’ll play with their toys and talk out loud too whilst playing. Usually, these are the times when you can pick up on any issues or problems they might be facing, such as having bad nightmares or not liking going to pre-school, as they might talk about these experiences whilst playing with their dolls.

Whilst dolls might serve as great gifts and presents to buy for little girls, they can also come in quite useful too.

Monster High Lagoona Blue Doll

The Monster High Lagoona Blue Doll is one of those very trendy fashion dolls that seem to be all the rage right now. Lagoona Blue is the daughter of the infamous Sea Monster.

Since all the Monster High dolls come with their very own unique pet, Lagoona Blue is no exception and also comes with Neptuna, her pet piranha.

We’re not sure what it is about the Monster High dolls that make kids want to collect them (and adults too seem to like these trendy-setting dolls).
It might be their sense of fashion or the detailing that each of the dolls has, that makes them so different to other fashion dolls.

Lagoona, for example, has webbed fingers as well as fin attachments on her forearms and the sides of her calves. She has a blue-ish tint on her skin and a to-die-for fish scale themed outfit. Oh, and she wears fish net stockings too. Can you see the level of detail that has gone into one of these dolls?

Securing Lagoona Blue’s Arms So They Don’t Fall Off

The Monster High fashion dolls have removable hands and feet and moveable joints so that it is easier to dress them in the cool new Monster High costumes.

However, with the Lagoona Blue doll, it seems that some parents are concerned that the arms are a bit too loose or they get quite loose over time.

According to some parents, a solution to this is to use clean nail polish around the peg and socket joint. First, remove the arm out of the socket.
Then coat the peg part of the joint with a light layer of clear nail polish, let it dry fully.
Lastly, reinsert the arm back into the socket.

You can add more nail polish or file it down with a nail file if you find you have put too much on and the arm is too tight.

Either way, you’ll find that the arm will now fit securely in place.

The other Monster High dolls, Clawd, Ghoulia, Frankie Stein, Clawdeen, Spectra Vondergeist and Abbey Bominable, are just some of them and they are all different from each other with very unique characteristics.
